Trading Up!

The day before Thanksgiving we spent a lot of time test driving cars. We were looking at vehicles that are classified as “crossovers” because we wanted something that had enough room in the back that we could carry slightly bigger items as needed without resorting to a truck.

The test drive experience is always weird. One dealership told us we could only make right turns, thus resulting in a drive around the block. Another dealership the salesman sat in the back and told us all about how he lived in France for a while, and his trips into Utah and all the weird things about living in Vegas without mentioning the vehicle’s merits at all.

The thing that annoyed me was at the Toyota dealership. Yep… I’m calling them out by brand name because they made me a little angry. They took away our car keys so they could take a look at what would be our potential trade-in. They escorted us inside and kept trying to convince us to buy a car that day. When we said no to one person, they would go get another person on their team to assault us. Finally I told them to just give us our car keys back and let us leave. They were very prompt in calling us back a few hours later to try to “see what we can work out to get you buying”.

The Toyota was one of our top two contenders, but their pushiness convinced us to lower their status a little. And after a few Google searches, our mind was made up.

On Saturday we decided to trade in my husband’s 2001 Subaru Outback:
Bye Bye Outback

For a brand new 2010 Subaru Outback:
Hello Outback

I guess we’re kind of a Subie family now. According to the salesman the only thing we’re missing to make us true Subaru fans is a dog.

  1. We were just driving behind one yesterday and my husband said, “I like those Subaru’s.” Unfortunately, it sounded more like “Sue Bar Ooze” – but I thought of you guys, nonetheless! :)

  2. I drive a used Toyota now and LOVE it. But my dream is for my next car to be a Subaru.
    So lucky you!

I remember a very pushy salesman – I had never bought a used car before – being the recipient of my parents hand-me-downs for many years… so when the dealership asked for my employer and work number, I thought it was to verify employment/finances.
Dude started calling me at work everyday. I was a news reporter at the time and when he finally got me on the phone, he complained that he could never get me at my desk – well DUH! I briefly explained my job to him and said, “When I AM at my desk I’m on DEADLINE. You should NEVER call me at work about selling me a car!!”

So on my next day off, he called me at home – grr- and asked, “What do we have to do to sell you a car TODAY?”
I replied, “Make my payments $100 a month.”
He said that was impossible. I said, “You asked what it would take and I told you.”
    He never called again.
