Maybe Proofread?

For some reason, I get an insane amount of pleasure when I see typos on advertisements or TV. Yes, I’ve put up blog posts with typos, but my audience is much smaller and they’re always corrected promptly. In live TV I can understand when typos slip through because things tend to get crazy, but I still like spotting them. Printed pieces and pre-produced graphics on TV/web are open to mockery though. Here’s one I saw on WomensHealthMag.com today:

I think it is for their “Abs Diet Plan” or “Flat Belly Diet” or one of those trendy “named” programs that encourage people to simply eat right and exercise. (Let’s ignore the fact that the ad clearly states “No Dieting” in this “Diet Plan”…) My beef was with the line before. Let’s clear this up with some definitions, shall we?

The word probably intended:
Deprivation – The state of being deprived; privation; loss; want;

The word actually used:
Depravation – moral perversion; impairment of virtue and moral principles;

Of course, I didn’t write the marketing plan nor do I know their goals. Maybe they have a core audience of those who want to lose some weight but are fearful of compromising their high integrity in the process. Perhaps it is for the “Holy Diet!” plan or “Praying Off Pounds!” and those followers need that extra encouragement that they’re on the right path. In which case, nice work… this is a great ad!

  1. Where, oh where did the sarcasm come from?

  2. In HS Mrs Roundy paid me to grade essays, and at SUU I graded the essays for all the Art History classes. I too, am always laughing at typos in so-called professional adds. The biggest one is how often people put commas where they don’t go…its a little ridiculous really.
    Of course, my comments online are always riddled in with typos, but I blame it on the baby in one arm and typing too quickly….
