Shooter

Plot:
A marksman living in exile is coaxed back into action after learning of a plot to kill the president. Ultimately double-crossed and framed for the attempt, he goes on the run to track the real killer and find out who exactly set him up, and why.
From the IMDB Profile

Notable:
Apparently one must be wicked smart to be a pro sniper, figuring trigonometry equations in their head on the fly. Mark Wahlberg’s character’s last name (Swagger) is a derivation of a Marine scout/sniper’s slang for a quick calculation of a bullet’s trajectory, which is SWAG (sophisticated wild ass guess).

Quote:
Your moral compass is so f#&*ed up, I’ll be shocked if you manage to find your way back to the parking lot.

Rating: R for strong graphic violence and some language

Shooter

My feelings are pretty mixed on this film. It felt really long, like some things were dragged out and convoluted excessively. In reality it was just 2 hours, fairly typical for a feature length action film.

I thought Mark Wahlberg did a good job with his role and it was interesting how so many other key roles were filled by non-”name” actors. It kind of made it easier to get into the story. Sometimes elements of a story can be hidden behind the “star quality” of certain players.

But I also felt like there were several moments where just as I was starting to get an idea of what direction the film may be going, only to have them yank it out from under me and introduce another character into the mix. People’s actions and motivations seem to change very quickly, going from timid to ballsy in a matter of moments.

Overall it is a complicated conspiracy plot that sometimes gets a little ahead of itself. It seems to reel it back in, but not quickly enough to have kept me from getting a little skeptical about the film’s potential each time.

My rating: 3.5 stars

Let’s Talk Politics

I don’t talk about politics on here very often. Alright, let’s be honest… I NEVER talk politics on here. I’ve always felt very uneducated in that realm, like I would make an ass of myself by opening my mouth and letting words come out in regard to the subject.

But lately… it is so unavoidable. The political arena has infiltrated so many parts of life and it is truly impossible to avoid the topic. The fever pitch surrounding it all is giving me a migraine the size of… Alaska.

With each new presidential election we are in a more technologically-advanced world and that gives us access to more and more information. Right now, I’m debating whether that information is helpful or harmful. Being bombarded with so much information fills my brain with more questions than answers on a daily basis. We have the regular media outlets of the past (TV, newspapers), we have blogs, we have viral video, we have Twitter… basically it’s a never ending buffet of information. I’ve already unbuttoned my brain, yet I keep stuffing random bits of information in there – even when there is no more room!

Honestly, I don’t even know how to make an educated decision anymore. If I read the candidates “official” materials, I’m only presented with their propaganda approved for public consumption. If I try searching for further information, I run across arguments that are so vehemently ANTI-[topic], that the educational benefits are non-existant.

I need plain, simple facts.
What are the pros and cons of each politician’s plan for all of the crises our nation needs to address?
I don’t want overly-passionate, substance-lacking, anger-driven fury.

How do you find your information? Do you have sources that you feel are truly “fair and balanced”?
