A while ago I posted about getting a new bed. For the most part, I’ve been pretty happy with the bed. Sure, there was the time that we tried to order a new bedspread using the SleepNumber Rewards certificate that was sent to my parents (because we listed them as a referrer when we purchased) and the company was out of the bedspread, but neglected to tell us this fact until AFTER we had placed the order and I had to contact them to ask, “So… where’s my new blanket?” But overall, it’s been great.
Well, now they’re doing a special event called the “Sleep-In Challenge“. Basically they’re encouraging everybody to try adopting better sleep habits. From all the research I read about how sleep-deprived our nation is, it seems like everyone could use some improvement on their resting hours.
Now, I can’t exactly sleep-in longer each day because I have to get up to run before the heat levels get completely intolerable. But I am finding that as I train I need to make up some of that rest, so I’ve made it a point to lie down for a half-hour to an hour each day after work. Sometimes I sleep, sometimes I just meditate and let my mind drift. But that little block of time has really improved how I feel, I feel refreshed and ready to tackle the rest of the evening. I’ve also been trying to get to bed earlier each night to compensate for the early morning hours. Sleep is just as important in my training as are miles on the pavement and cross-training!
For those of you who are interested, you can sign up for the “Sleep-In Challenge” by visiting www.beds.com. The challenge is 6 weeks long and begins on June 20, but if you miss the first day you can always sign up a little later. The best part is that people who sign up are entered to win prizes, which could even be a new Sleep Number bed. (Loralee, you still want a new bed? Here’s your chance!)
As I’m trying to take better care of myself I’m realizing the importance of catching your zzz’s. I know I’m not the best one to be dispensing this advice as I have been neglecting myself for the past couple years, but I’m trying to change that and I encourage all of you to treat yourselves kindly as well!
