When Friends Visit

My college friends Mike and Keli came through town today on their way to California. Mike and Keli started dating each other about the same time Kevin and I started dating each other and we all graduated from college together. We had a lot of good times in the broadcasting program during school, spending copious amounts of time playing working at the university’s radio and TV stations.

Mike and Keli have two adorable little girls and it was fun to see them again, since it has been about 2 years and their youngest was just hanging out in a car seat/carrier the last time we saw them. Now she is a full-fledged toddler that talks and moves around on her own accord. And their older daughter, she’s going to be starting kindergarten next fall. It blows my mind that it was nearly a decade ago that we were young college graduates with our diplomas, heading out into the world.

We had a nice time chatting, had some lunch and we went to Retro Bakery for dessert. (And as a belated birthday treat for Keli.) Even though our time together was short, it was still great to see them.

Here’s a picture Mike snapped of Keli and me in my backyard today before they left.

The Millionaires

The Millionaires by Brad Meltzer

What would you steal if you couldn’t get caught?

This book was offered as a free audiobook via iTunes for a week and I snagged it during that time. I had never heard of the author and even though I’ve been cruising through the “chick lit” lately, mystery/thriller novels are my first real literature love. I’m glad that I listened to this because it has introduced me to a new author and I am very interested to look into his other offerings. This book moved at a good pace and I enjoyed the relationship between the brothers (with the exception of how often they communicated complete sentences with one another via a glance). I did get annoyed with some of the computer explanations, the descriptions of servers and technology just didn’t seem to flow as well as the financial world plot – that’s probably just me being picky because I work in IT. But overall, this was a good book and I found myself hopping on the treadmill very frequently so I could listen. (The trouble with audiobooks, I only listen to them when running.)

My rating: 3.5 stars

Synopsis:
What would you steal if you couldn’t get caught?

It started as the perfect crime. Then it took a turn for the worse.

Charlie and Oliver Caruso are brothers who work at Greene & Greene, a private bank so exclusive you need two million dollars just to be a client. But when the door of success slams in their faces, they’re faced with an offer they can’t refuse: three million dollars in an abandoned account. No one knows it exists, and even better, it doesn’t belong to anyone.

It’s a foolproof crime. More importantly, for Charlie and Oliver, it’s a way out of debt and the key to a new life. All they have to do is take the money.

But when they do, they discover they’ve got a lot more on their hands than the prize. Before they can blink, a friend is dead—and the bank, the Secret Service, and a female private investigator are suddenly closing in. What invisible strings were attached to that account? How are they going to prove they’re innocent? And why is the Secret Service trying to kill them? Trapped in a breakneck race to stay alive, Charlie and Oliver are about to discover a secret that will test their trust and forever change their lives.
