Greener

Drinking:
I need to get a new water bottle (or two or three). I’ve been reading about the dangers of plastic a lot lately and I’ve been contemplating getting a Sigg or a Klean Kanteen instead. Anybody have experience with those and want to give me some feedback?

Sleeping:
When we bought our new bed, we bought new sheets as well. Bamboo sheets. First of all, they feel wonderful, so soft and silky. But they’re also good because bamboo is not bathed in pesticides like cotton crops are and it is quickly renewable because of the rate at which it grows. And bamboo fibers are better at helping regulate your temperature through the night and they have some natural anti-bacterial qualities as well. If you get the chance, I highly recommend them.

Bagging:
Have you heard that Whole Foods is getting rid of plastic bags? This is causing the media to question if more and more retailers will follow suit. Part of me wants to cheer and applaud this move. But part of me stops to think, “What will I use to line my bathroom garbage cans?” But I guess I need to figure that out anyway because I need to get some reusable bags to use when I go grocery shopping anyway.

Mailing:
Do you get a lot of junk catalogs? We get our fair share and most of those end up straight in the recycle bins. But it is a lot easier if you just don’t get them in the first place. I recently learned of a pretty cool website that can help you eliminate those mailings.

  1. Huh, I’ve never heard of Bamboo sheets; sounds like a good idea.
I love Whole Foods, though they were pretty expensive the few times I went there. I doubt other stores will follow suit any time soon.

  2. I now use “green” shopping bags. It feels good.

But I am running out of plastic bags for carrying stuff, etc.
    :)

  3. I love the catalog website. I forwarded it to a friend who just told me how annoyed she was with the piles and piles of catalogs she has.

  4. Tearese: You can get tons of stuff made from Bamboo! Clothes, linens, floors, bowls, cutting boards, etc. It’s kind of fascinating.

Angella: You’re so good for using the “green” bags. I really need to find some and start using them.

Loralee: Isn’t it a cool site? I was so excited to find it. Except now that I found it, I’m anxiously waiting for those junk catalogs to come in the mail and so far none have arrived!

  5. Do you really need a liner in the bathroom trash? I haven’t used one in there in years.

If anything gets icky… just wash it out when you scrub the tub. It’s a trash can after all.

Before I delve deeper into the magazine site…. is it just for catalouges or can they make Comcast stop sending me full color advertisements EVERY FREAKING DAY?!?!? I’ve already called twice to ask them to stop – but they claim it’s coming from another source.

  6. trs: Good question. It certainly makes it convenient to just grab the handles on the trash bag and carry it out on trash day.

I hate when companies send you stuff repeated. Cox (our cable company) sends me stuff multiple times each week, probably similar to the garbage you are getting from Comcast.

  7. trs: Just checked, Comcast is listed as one of their companies you can block.

  8. I have to voe Sigg just because they come in pretty colors…but of course don’t go by me.

I’m glad that Whole Foods is ending their plastic bags. I love using the reusable ones. It does feel good!

I want that one, but I have no idea what 0.4 liters means ins ounces. Hmm…

  10. Sparklie: I have to admit, the pretty factor of the Sigg bottles kind of sways me! That bottle you linked to is way cute. The complaint I’ve heard about them is the narrow top makes them very difficult to clean.

0.4L is only about 13 oz.

  11. I have Sigg water bottles and really like them for the most part. I bought several sizes and like certain tops more than others. My main complaint is they don’t make really big ones. I like to drink a lot of water. But they are pretty! I bought cleaning tablets for them- which are pricey and probably not necessary but make clean really easy.

I just reuse my plastic bags over and over again at Whole Foods. I haven’t heard they were getting rid of them though! They just changed them to be 100% recycled last year- so I’m surprised. They were promoting those over their paper ones!

Where did you buy your bamboo sheets from?

  12. Been forever that I’ve read your blog. I was typing in the wrong link on the laptop!!!

Love the idea of the sheets. Must check that out. Get the bags. I love them. I too have tried to figure out what I’m going to put in my trash cans!

I agree about the water bottles. We just use water bottles. Check out in a search worm poop I like what they do with plastic bottles. I’m going to get some of their stuff this summer when I start to garden. (I’ll blog about it too.) I’m just trying to increase the use of drinking water and not soda. (smile)
