Before 30: Marathon (Training Update)
FYI: This post may contain a lot of SHOUTING!
I’ve been training for this damn marathon for weeks. MONTHS! And everything has been fine and dandy. I’ve felt tough, powerful, accomplished and focused. I had a goal and I was going to complete it. I was becoming an athlete!
And now, the event is 2 weeks away. TWO WEEKS AWAY! Less than that, it’s on January 13.
I did my 20 miler last weekend, the longest distance in the training program and came home broken and beaten. Sure, I did all 20 miles but the subsequent days were awful.
I’m now in the tapering stages of my training, my mileage is decreasing. I took a few days off around Christmas, resting and letting me knee have a break. And yesterday I did 10 miles. And limped home the last 3/4 mile as my knee kept buckling. Buckling and trying to make me FALL DOWN!
And as the day progressed, my left ankle started turning a lovely shade of purple/green. I didn’t twist it or injure it in any way that I can remember, but it’s swollen and ugly now.
Plus my hip is hurting again, and a bruise is appearing on the surface now too. I’m used to getting bruises from running into things, but not from injuries on the INSIDE!
I have nail polish on my toes from my last pedicure. When I had the pedicure done we removed the nail polish and discovered my right toenail was black. I’m a little curious to remove the nail polish now and see how many more nails are blackened, but maybe I’ll just wait until after the marathon. It might be disheartening.
Now I’m trying to figure out what to do for the next couple weeks. I suppose I’ll take it easy. If I’m going to injure myself in a big way, I may as well do it on the marathon course instead of on some street near my home the week before.
I’m just so frustrated.
wow that really sucks. I hope everything is better in time for the race. When is it again?
Tearese: The marathon is on January 13. I’ll edit my entry to include that!
Aw, Jill. You’ve been working so hard!
Chin up – you have lots of time to heal, and I know you’ll do well!
Good Hell.
I have zero advice on this as I am the most unfit person on the planet, but I really hope that you are recovered by the marathon!
Angella: Thanks for the well wishes! I need those right now!
Loralee: Oh darn… I was really hoping for your fitness advice!
In all reality, a little encouragement may be exactly what I was hoping for by posting this and you’ve given me that! Thanks.
In all honesty, I have been awed by your running in the double digits of miles. 20 miles and a marathon are the same to me. WAY TO GO! You did it!!!
But seriously, take it easy. You may be able to heal in time if you lay off for a bit.
Cardine: You don’t know how tempting it is to take your “You did it!” to heart right now!
I hope you’re feeling better already. I know this feels like a huge setback, but you have been rocking your marathon training. You are so going to do this.
Sparklie: Thanks. I’ve been icing and resting my knee, so hopefully I can jump in there and beat this thing!
