Selected Comfort

A little while ago I mentioned that we had purchased a new mattress set. We bought the Sleep Number 5000 bed by Select Comfort. (A bed with a number in it sounds so cool, like it comes with jet packs and an invisibility shield or something.) We’ve been sleeping on the bed for a week and a half now and I just wanted to post some of my thoughts.

This may be the best purchase I’ve made in a long time. If only for the reason that since getting it I have slept through the night completely without repeatedly waking up. I use a CD player alarm clock and in the past I would lie awake and stare at the numbers changing until it was time for the alarm to go off. And when 5:25 AM clicked over, the CD would start to spin and I would reach over to turn the alarm clock off before the music even started. Now, I’m actually asleep and the music has to start before I wake up.

I love that I don’t feel the whole bed shake and quake every time my husband rolls over. Sure, there are times when it’s purr-fectly fine for the bed to be shakin’ and quakin’ but those times are not every hour throughout the night as one person sleeps and the other is tossed awake.

If I want to read in bed, I can increase the firmness of the mattress for better support while I’m propped up in a different position. I never read in my old bed because it was just uncomfortable for me. I felt like my hips were sinking in at an awkward position and basically I focused more on how much the bed sucked instead of my book.

My husband hasn’t been sleeping as soundly as I have since we got the new bed, but I’m not sure if that’s mainly because he’s been sick for most of the time. I hope that’s the only problem because if I have to give up my new bed, I may cry.

There is one annoyance: We got the king-size bed, but it doesn’t seem to be exactly the same as our old king-size bed. It’s as if the bed is an extra inch or so bigger, so it’s a royal pain to pull the fitted sheet into place. I bet they make it that way on purpose so the consumer feels more pressure to buy their special bedding.

And if that’s the case, I bought my bed about a week too soon. Shortly after I bought they had a notice on their web site about special discounts on linens. But I may have to be resigned to fighting and using my muscles to pull the sheet into place anyway. I have pretty much decided to buy new bamboo sheets anyway.

But if you’re in the market for a new bed and you are considering one of these beds, let me know and I’ll give you our customer referral number so we can get money to put toward other Select Comfort products, like comforters or blankets or pillows or whatever else I may feel like buying! :-)

  1. A good bed is worth its weight in GOLD.

Before we got our pillow-top, I would sleep poorly and wake up with a sore back. Not anymore!

Glad to hear your bed is treating you well :)

  2. PLEASE email me about it because I guarantee you that we want to purchase THIS BED in the next year. (Hopefully six months.)

I wake up in pain every.single.day.of.my.life.

It is like I’ve been thrown out of a train. Then run over by a tractor. Then pee’d on my the guy driving the tractor.

I need some relief and my sucky mattress is NOT it.

  3. Ooh! This bed sounds fantastic. My parents just got a new mattress so I got their old one and I am still so thrilled that it isn’t an air mattress I haven’t moved onto thinking how it’s still not a good one. If I decide to get a new mattress when I get my apartment I will definitely email you.

  4. yea for a full night’s sleep!

  5. Wow, sounds great! We got a new bed two years ago. The full price would have been around 2000 dollars. I still like it way more than the old one, but its not perfect.

  6. New mattresses are like heaven, no?
Jeff doesn’t like our pillow top as much as I ADORE IT.
He’s a stomach sleeper and he feels that it really isn’t suited to stomach sleepers.

I find it fits any position.
    Yes, even THAT one!

    For shame!
