To TV or Not To TV?

There was once a time when I thought we would have to upgrade our DVR to a multiple-channel version. There were so many shows on TV that interested me and several would air at the same time. We had several evenings where we would record something on the DVR in the family room while watching another channel upstairs in the bonus room.

And then I started to get bored by TV shows. Many of the shows I had watched just weren’t doing anything for me, so I stopped watching. I no longer watch Grey’s Anatomy, Desperate Housewives and uh… what the hell else did I watch? Why did it all seem so important?

As our TV watching whittled down, it still felt like a tremendous amount of time that we were scheduling and devoting to the networks. And we just have 1 or 2 shows on 4 or 5 nights that we follow.

Neither of us have the chance to watch much TV when we are traveling for work, so shows tend to pile up on the DVR. We have the entire season thus far of CSI recorded and haven’t watched one single episode. Now it’s tempting to just delete them all.

Two days ago my husband was saying that he hoped the writer’s strike continued. If there are no new shows being put out, we no longer have to feel “obligated” to follow shows that have seemed essential for so long.

Then last night while watching a DVR’d episode of Heroes we saw a promo for American Gladiators on NBC. My husband immediately said, “I give… I miss the writers. Give them what they want!”

It must be bad when the mere suggestion of American Gladiators on primetime makes my husband change his mind in regard to television lately.

  1. I AM SO SICK OF THE STRIKE.

More than that, I am appalled that people that make much less than the executives and writers are losing their jobs because they are caught up in this mess.

    I heart TV.

I could never give it up.

What can I say? I am weak.

  2. Not TV.
Haven’t had it in 4 years now.
    PRICELESS.

Of course, we do have a television, but the only channel we get is static, which might make a nice backdrop for Poltergeist, but not OMSHville.

    Movies. I love movies.
We schedule them here and there.

Say no to TV – much like crack, I swear it’ll kill ya (or make you stupid – can’t figure out which would be worse).

  3. Oh TV…
It’s been my best friend since childhood…it would be like cutting off a limb, but since we’ve had DVR, it’s been VERY freeing. And, I totally get wanting to delete everything. (by the way: CSI has lost its luster this year…I’ve been deleting them after 5 min. anyway).
I’m sure after Retro is open, TV will lose what’s left of the spell it has on me.
About the strike: when I saw the promo for the “Ultimate Choir Showdown” coming up on NBC I was done. PLEASE PAY THEM WHAT THEY DESERVE!

  4. I am fine with the strike because I feel that it is a good way for the market to decide how much the writers are actually worth. I do feel badly, though, for the people who are loosing jobs, etc. because of it.

I used to watch “American Gladiators” when I was younger, so I think it’s great that they brought it back. I probably won’t watch it, though. I feel like watching TV is like giving away the time in my life, so I try not to do it so much. I have so many other things that I’d rather do than watch sitcoms.

  5. NO TV!!! :) Have to admit, we haven’t had one or any sort of connection for one to be honest, the actual device called a television we had, but like OMSH we had only a channel called static. (Unfortunately, a couple of years ago, we discovered abc online.)

But I loves me some movies projected on my walls! It’s the ONLY way to fly! Because tv? Sucks. (with the exception of dancing with the stars online but don’t tell anyone – /tiny print)

  6. Forgot to say for how long! Since 1994! (omg, I just admitted what an old fart I am) Way back in the days when my daughter was starting school! (whoa…)

  7. I went for several years in college and after without watching tv, unless someone else had it on when I was passing through. Then I got married. My husband loves tv, but because of our schedules, I was able to still ignore it most of the time.
Then, slowly, we started to get shows we HAD to record and watch together. Lost. Smallville. Heroes. And somehow some really stupid ones crept into the mix: Beauty and the Geek. Next Top Model. (yeah, we watch a lot of CW).
I like my shows, but I do feel a sense of relief in the summer and over christmas, when all the shows are DONE for a while, and I am able to use my time for something else. Like a movie.

  8. Loralee: Like you, I am appalled at the people losing their jobs over this. It’s sad.

OMSH: Being stupid might be worse… I’ve always been intrigued since I learned you didn’t have a TV though. When my husband is out of town on business, I usually can go the whole week without even turning the TV on, save for the occasional weather report if things seem extremely strange outside.

Retro: Ultimate Choir Showdown? Wow… haven’t seen mention of that one yet but that seems pretty pathetic. It’s weird when I’ve seen game show crossover events advertised, where one game show bleeds over into another. Those are weird.

Cardine: I used to watch Gladiators sporadically when I was young too. It’s just a little weird that it is being brought back as a primetime show.

Keri: Since 1994? That’s impressive! I love the idea of projecting movies on a wall though. Right now we just have a movie night each week where we get our Netflix rentals and watch them on the big LCD screen.

Tearese: The CW? That’s stupid TV central! ;-)

  9. Playing catch up on your blogs… I know what you are saying about TV shows. So sad that they have gone to crap. What happened to funny sitcoms… that you could laugh about…. okay I still have scrubs (for a few more months) and I’m liking How I Met Your Mother?! But really, what is happening… are we just all growing up?
