Over the weekend the spouse and I bit the bullet and purchased a new mattress set. I’ve often read that mattresses last 5-10 years, although most people keep them a lot longer than that. They last longer if they are zipped into a hypoallergenic cover to keep the dust mites out and if they are good quality. When we got married 6.5 years ago we bought the bottom of the line of the bottom of the line mattresses. We were poor newlyweds and needed a big bed, but didn’t want to spend a lot.
The bed has been lumpy and shaky and terrible for the past couple years. I haven’t had a good night’s sleep in a long time. I’m sure there are other factors in my life that contribute to the insomnia as well, but the bed was one of the problems. Any time my husband moved at night I woke to feel the whole bed shake. I hated when he would come to bed at night, because he’s one of those people that flops down onto the mattress and that would shake and rattle me. Plus, we are very different sizes and it was hard to agree upon the firmness for the bed that would work for us. I think in the end we just ended up compromising on something based on cost and being tired of shopping.
So this week we purchased a Sleep Number bed. With dual air chambers. DUAL. TWO. That means we can adjust the separate sides of the bed to meet our individual needs. So hopefully we can both get a good night’s rest while still sleeping in the same bed.
The bed will be delivered in a couple weeks and then we get a 30 day trial period. If it doesn’t improve our quality of sleep we can return it. It had better pan out because I am so eager for it to arrive, the anticipation and excitement is far greater than that of perusing the old Sears Christmas catalogs as a kid.
