Taking Off

After a hard week of work, in which I took sick leave three out of five days making a grand total of 2 complete working days, I am taking vacation all next week. And I’m really glad. I earn it, I deserve it and dammit… I’m taking it. Even after taking a whole week off, I’ll still have more than the maximum amount of vacation hours I can carry over from year to year and will still have to use every bit of vacation I earn this year, just to not LOSE annual leave.

Plus, the hubby got a promotion at work September 1 and that has made his job busy, busy, busy. This is basically our only chance to spend any time together until Thanksgiving day. He’s booked on jobs clear through then, and he’ll probably have to work over that holiday anyway.

So we’re taking off for San Diego. It’s not really far away or totally exotic, but it’s different from home and that’s all that is required.

We leave on Sunday and according to weather.com, it’s supposed to be in the low 70′s all week. I might freeze to death, as I am a giant wimp and have very much acclimated to desert heat. But I have jackets and long pants. I don’t need to get in the ocean, plus I’m not even sure if I still have a bathing suit since the last time I bought one was when we went to Florida for our 1-year anniversary. That probably doesn’t fit now.

So if you have any suggestions of fun things to do in the San Diego area, let me know. And please don’t suggest Sea World. While I’m sure there may be a day where we have offspring and want to visit theme parks, I’m much more into hiking, galleries, museums, unique shops and tasty restaurants now. And places to take pictures.

Son of a Witch

Author: Gregory Maguire

Synopsis:
Liir has a lot of questions. He has always been with the witch Elphaba, but he doesn’t know whether she is his mother. She always evades the issue. When she is unceremoniously dispatched by that girl from Kansas, Liir at 14 has nowhere to go and nothing meaningful to do. He has Elphaba’s cape and broom but no magical abilities, and the question of his parentage is now more than bothersome. He leaves the castle and Elphaba’s long shadow, and sets out into the wide world for some answers. But the questions get bigger and more complicated. For soon he wakes in the Cloister of St. Glinda, amnesiac and healing from broken bones, sprains, and internal injuries. How did he get in such a state? Another mystery: Candle, the mute young novice who pulled him from the edge of death with her extraordinary musical gift and has cared for him so intently, has unintentionally bound herself to him in ways that could change them into something bigger than they can imagine. The biggest question is, why has Liir’s life been spared?

Thoughts:
I adored Wicked I enjoyed Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister and Mirror Mirror. I’m not entirely sure if I liked this book or not. I anticipated the story unfolding, but am not sure if I feel fulfilled or satisfied with the completion. Maguire is intriguing as an author, he manages to weave flowery descriptors into sentences with nouns as base as “crud”. Maguire is also kind of disturbing as an author, weaving weird sexual idiosyncrasies into plots and seemingly having a weird obsession with menstrual cycles. (Trust me dude, they’re not THAT exciting or mystifying.) I listened to the audio version of this on my iPod while doing marathon training. It was performed by the author, so it was fun to hear his voice and interpretation of the characters and story. But overall, I just don’t feel this was as strong as his other offerings.
