The newspaper’s pick for the Best Pizza in the 2007 Best of Las Vegas section of the Las Vegas Review Journal, Settebello pizza is one of very few pizzerias in the U.S. certified by the Vera Pizza Napoletana. This means they have very specific requirements for the ingredients, cooking methods and final product keeping in line with authentic Napoli pizza.
We ordered the ‘Rucola’ salad to start. It was “Eh…”. Consisting of arugula, lemon juice, olive oil, salt and pepper, it wasn’t an overly made-up salad, but it kind of needed a little something extra. My husband found the arugula a little too bitter. (He’s got very sensitive taste buds to that kind of thing). But the restaurant isn’t praised for the salad, that was just ordered to get some vegetables in, being health-conscious and all!
The menu says the pizzas are “individual” sized at 12″ each. That is a bit large for our appetites so we split a pizza. We chose to split the pizza named after the establishment, The Settebello. The pizza consists of: Crushed Tomatoes, Pancetta, Wood Oven Roasted Fennel Sausage, Roasted Mushrooms, Toasted Pine Nuts, Mozzarella, Basil, Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
The flavor was simply astounding, it was so fresh and the flavors really complemented one another. I wanted to savor each and every bite, but if I took too long the pizza would have been cold! The crust had amazing texture, it was chewy and crisp. The tomatoes were very flavorful and the meat toppings were great. I loved the addition of pinenuts to the pizza as well.
The oven in the back fascinated me, I wish I could have gotten a closer look at it. According to the web site it is a wood-burning oven and it heats up to 950° F. It only takes about a minute to cook the pizza completely!
The environment is casual, we were told to seat ourselves. A waitress did bring menus to us and take our order. Service was prompt and the restaurant was clean.
It was a long drive from our house, but I think it was completely worth it. I’m hoping to be able to take my family members (or anyone else that wants to come visit me and get pizza) there so I can try other things and so I can share the wonderful flavors with them.
