Pan’s Labyrinth

Plot:
In the fascist Spain of 1944, the bookish young stepdaughter of a sadistic army officer escapes into an eerie but captivating fantasy world.
From the IMDB Profile

Notable:
After the first week movie theaters in Mexico had to place signs over the movie posters warning about the graphic violence as parents were taking small children to see it. This is most definitely NOT a children’s movie, even if it is a fantasy or fairy tale.

Quote:
Have you seen my mother? She’s very beautiful. She is sick with baby. Did you notice?

Thoughts:
This was a really good movie. It warns that it contains graphic violence, and that is absolutely true. Kevin and I both agree that some of the scenes were amongst the most brutal and gory we’ve ever seen, but it’s still a phenomenal film. As with any good film in a foreign language, you forget you’re reading subtitles very quickly and are captured by the story. The little girl playing the main character, Ofelia, gives a remarkable performance and the creatures in this film give a whole new stunning visual to fairies, fauns and the creepy Pale Man. This one is going to stick with me.

Rating: R for graphic violence and some language
