Crunchy Granola

I think I need a sewing machine. I might need to learn how to sew my own clothing. Well, maybe not all of my own clothing. But I really like wearing skirts all summer long here in The Vegas. It’s just a practical clothing item for the summer heat. They can be dressy or casual, often by just changing the shirt and shoes. Plus I really like some of the fun prints that I’ve seen on skirts in stores lately.

Unfortunately, I can’t find any that fit me.

So I just need to learn how to sew my own clothes.

Then I’ll really be a hippie, milling my own flour while wearing my homemade clothing. :-)

4 Things: Places I’ve Lived

  1. Peoria, Illinois
This is where I was born and spent the first 7 years of my life. Truthfully, my memories are very limited, mainly childhood things. Playing with other kids in the cul-de-sac, the spook hollow every Halloween, building a snowman at Easter time, the forest behind our house and sleeping in the basement when there was a tornado watch. But they’re good memories, innocent memories, warm-fuzzy memories. And it allows me to claim that I’m not a true Utahn, because for some reason there is a negative stigma associated with that in my mind.
  2. Cedar City, Utah
My family moved here when I was in elementary school. I lived here all the way through high school and college. I even chose to move back to Cedar after moving away for my first post-college job. I like the town, it’s comfortable. I lived there for more years than any other place that I’ve lived so far and I guess it will always feel like my ‘hometown’. Unless that feeling changes once you start raising your own children in a location. Then maybe I will have a new ‘hometown’, because I’m pretty sure my mom considers Cedar to be her ‘hometown’ now.
  3. Salt Lake City, Utah
I moved here for my TV job after college. I hated living in Salt Lake. I don’t know exactly why, but nothing about this city clicked for me. While I lived there the entire town was under construction in preparation for the 2002 Winter Olympics so driving was a nightmare. I worked weird hours so I rarely got to experience the city on a ‘normal’ schedule. And I loathed living in the same city as my grandparents because I was expected to come to their house for dinner every Sunday and that made me feel like a little kid as opposed to a grown woman on my own. But I did love having my very own apartment and there was a tornado in SLC while I was there (on my birthday), so I always like to say that the world went crazy the day I turned 21.
  4. Las Vegas, Nevada
My current place of residence! I never really thought I would want to live in Las Vegas, but now that I’m there I find that it agrees with me. The world has a whole perception of Sin City, and that image does exist. But most of us that live there have completely normal lives. We go to grocery stores, jobs, gyms, etc. And not all of us work in the entertainment or gaming industries. I like the warmer weather and the vast amenities available. I do find it a little annoying that I have to walk through a casino to see a movie at the theatre closest to my house. The smoke in the air is starting to clear since we passed a new anti-smoking measure, but that is slow going. I am terrified at the idea of raising children here. But on the whole, the city suits me and my current position in life.
