Plot:
A remake of the hit 2001 BBC TV series The Office (2001), this is a mockumentary that documents the exploits of a paper supply company in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Made up of head chief Michael Scott, a harmlessly deluded and ignorantly insensitive boss who cares about the welfare of his employees while trying to put his own spin on company policy. With an office including the likes of various peers who have their own hangups, The Office (2005) takes a look at the lives of it’s co-workers: bored but talented salesman Jim, his mildly sociopathic, butt kissing enemy Dwight, mildly righteous receptionist Pam, and indifferent temp Ryan.

Thoughts:
This show is funny. I don’t know what I expected at first, but it isn’t a slapstick sitcom like so many shows… and that is what makes the show work. The painfully awkward interchanges between boss Michael and his employees is genius. I’m eager to watch Season 2 and the original series with Ricky Gervais now.

One of the local news channels here is having their own little “reality show” competition. They are inviting people to come to a local casino on a specific day to audition in front of judges and cameras for a full-time traffic reporter position. After the audition, 10 finalists will be broadcast on the morning show for viewers to cast their vote. The competition will be narrowed down to five from there, where the finalists will have to audition on-air and the viewers get to vote again.
This contest is bugging me. Everytime the anchors start gabbing away about it, I bristle. Probably because I studied broadcasting in school, and while I’m not in the industry anymore, I still have a strong love for it and even miss it on occasion. I know people that have had to go to little tiny television markets after getting their degree, earning a salary that would barely cover any living expenses. They get to do the whole one-man-band reporting thing, spending a couple years here and there as they work their way up through the television markets.
I’m pretty sure that Vegas is a top 50 television market now. It just seems so completely wrong to me that some person can come in from the street and audition to get a job when there are so many qualified and competent people trying to earn their positions by getting legitimate experience.
Maybe I’m over-reacting. It’s just annoying me.
