Not a Curse Word

The spouse and I were going out to dinner and we passed a restaurant called “Yami Yami Japanese Food”. I read it aloud and said, “Hmmm… I wonder if that has an actual meaning or if they were just trying to replicate the sound of ‘yummy’.”

My spouse looked at the sign and said, “It probably means ‘shitty’. What is the Japanese word for shitty?”

“I don’t know. I don’t know any Japanese curse words.”

He looked at me in disbelief, “How could you study Japanese for two years in high school and not learn any curse words? That’s the first thing most kids in a foreign language class learn.”

I shrugged and informed him that since we didn’t have a text book or dictionaries, we were at the mercy of the teacher. She had served an LDS mission in Japan and thus whatever she taught us was what we learned.

My husband snorted in disgust at that.

I did a search when we got home and did find this interesting reference to the word “yami”.

A japanese term that describes a person or thing to be related to either darkness or evil.
- Urban Dictionary

That’s almost better than a curse word.
