My grandmother had surgery yesterday. They did a hysterectomy on her and also removed the mass from her abdomen that was showing up in the x-rays. The mass has been sent off for testing and we’ll know for sure whether or not it was/is cancer. But overall the surgery went well and my grandma should be out of the hospital in about 5 days. Hopefully.
Today is my mom’s 52nd birthday. I will be driving to Utah tomorrow to celebrate with her. My brother and his wife are also driving to Utah (from Denver) to party with us. I’m way excited because I haven’t seen them since last Thanksgiving.

Over the weekend my grandma (my dad’s mother) was hospitalized in Logan, Utah for complications related to pneumonia. While in the hospital, they discovered a lump in her abdomen. After x-rays and tests they were pretty sure that it was cancer, but they wanted to get another opinion.
My grandma was transferred to the Huntsman Cancer Institue in Salt Lake City. After running more tests they are pretty sure it is ovarian cancer. They are doing a surgery today and we’ll know for sure what the diagnosis is tomorrow.
It just seems so eerily ironic that while my family is spending time working on an event that raises money for cancer research, my grandma is being diagnosed with yet another cancer to hit the family.
Our Relay For Life event wasn’t huge, but we did our part. We raised over $15,000 for the American Cancer Society, $1000 of it was raised by a team of middle school kids. I’m just so very grateful to live during a time when there are so many advances being made toward medical breakthroughs.
