The Vegas Worth The $$$?

According to an article in the Las Vegas Review Journal yesterday, many hotels this weekend are booked solid and the rooms are going for exorbitant prices. A room at the MGM Grand that will sell for $89 tonight will be $599 tomorrow and Saturday, and they’re sold-out.

I understand that people want to come to Las Vegas, to party as they welcome in the New Year, so they can get completely trashed and spend January 1 hungover, vomiting and vowing to get in better shape and live a more healthful life in 2006. I just don’t understand paying $600 – $1000 for a room that you’re probably not going to spend any time in that evening. Seriously, most of these people will spend the entire night on The Strip and will probably stagger back to the hotel in time to checkout.

Of course, I’ll be eagerly watching the local news coverage from the comfort of my home. I hear that traditionally there is at least one person that gets so blitzed they fall off one of the sidewalk bridges that cross the Las Vegas Boulevard. That sounds like a splendid way to welcome the New Year! Unless you are ending the current year and your life as you do the little bridge dive.

Home on the Pop Culture Range

I Wanna Be a Cowboy by Boys Don’t Cry came on the 80′s radio station during lunch. The spouse looks at me and in time to the song says, “I wanna be a cowboy. And you can be my cowgirl.”

“I can? Gee…. thanks.”

“As long as there isn’t a more qualified applicant. I haven’t really advertised the position though. Figured I’d promote internally.”

“You can tell this song is old though. Now days the song would be more ‘I wanna be a cowboy and you can be my cowboy.’”

“It does kind of explain where all the cowboys have gone though, doesn’t it?”
