Newsworthy

One of my pet peeves while working in television was the way we had to name big stories. Not only did we have to name them, but we had to make special graphics for the stories as well. I never understood the importance to this because I don’t know of a single person who has ever watched TV and said, “Well, I’m watching that channel because their name for this news is better than the other channel.”

Since flooding is the news du jour in the state of Utah right now, every channel has, of course, named their flood coverage. The weird thing is that all of them are calling it “Floodwatch 2005″. Normally there would be slight variances in names, like “Floods of ’05″ or “Utah Floods” or something equally lame, but almost every station is calling it the same thing.

Are any of you influenced by what a channel names its coverage? I always wondered why we wasted time naming these segments and creating special graphic sets for them.

And speaking of reliable news sources, I was watching a rerun episode of “The Daily Show” this evening and they did a segment on blogs. I knew that several news channels were starting their own blogs, but I didn’t know that CNN now has segments in which two chicks read copy from other people’s blogs. That is pretty ridiculous, of course Jon Stewart has a special way of making me see the ridiculous in almost any story.

If any news channel would like to read about my bread-making experiments and what it is like to own a P-O-S Plymouth Neon, feel free to do so. Just make sure you enunciate and spell out my URL so all of your viewers can get to my site and re-read what you just read to them.

Now I must go to sleep. It is nearly 10:00 and that is my bedtime because I will turn into a pumpkin if I do not get my beauty rest. Actually I’ll just be a grumpy, unfocused employee at work tomorrow.
