Think, before you speak

Two recent conversations that were out of the ordinary:

1. When Kevin lost his job in 2002, my cell phone contract was up and we cancelled the service just to save money. But a year later, I got a new cell phone. Shortly after I got the new number, I was inundated with calls for “Greg”. People honestly didn’t seem to believe that I didn’t know Greg and that I wasn’t somehow affiliated with Greg. I even spoke to his mother for 15 minutes one day. It was kind of odd, but the calls eventually tapered off. I received another “Greg call” about a month ago, but like usual I just told the caller that I don’t know him and that this wasn’t his number anymore. On Saturday, my phone rang and guess who it was? Greg! Greg said that somebody mentioned to him that they tried calling his old phone and got some girl. Greg felt the need to call and apologize to me for receiving so many calls for him. I told him it was no big deal, that’s just the way it goes when numbers get reassigned. Well, after that, Greg said “I just enrolled at the university in town. Do you go to the university? Cause I was wondering if I’d seen you around. Maybe we could get together sometime?” Umm…. I think I was being asked out by someone I don’t know. So I just responded by saying, “No, I don’t attend the university. I work there though.” I thought that might make him think I’m too old for him, but that didn’t work. He asked me, “That’s cool. Did you just graduate? How long have you had my old number?” So I told him that I’d had the number for about a year now and that my husband had bought the cell phone for me as a gift. He hung up really quickly after that.

2. A women I work with came into my office to tell me that I shouldn’t worry about the fact that my mother has breast cancer and that the genetic ties aren’t that strong. (Even though my mom’s oncologist seems to think so, since my mom, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-aunt, etc. all have had the disease…). Anyway, this women basically told me that since my mom drinks Diet Coke, that’s what gave her cancer and since I’m young, if I stop drinking Diet Coke, then I won’t get cancer. She said I need to take care of myself through diet and exercise and I’ll be fine. I thought that was a little rude, waltzing in here and telling me that basically my mom brought cancer upon herself and that we are making terrible life choices. She doesn’t know anything about my day-to-day eating/exercise habits, so who was she to tell me these things? I wanted to ask her what she thought her smoking habits were doing to her health, but I refrained.
