Civically Responsible

Damn. I was subpoened to court. I have to appear on June 14. I’m assuming it is conjunction with our witnessing a drunk driving accident a little while ago. The subpoena didn’t say much except for the name of the case. I didn’t ever introduce myself to the drunk, so if it’s his name or not – I don’t know. But I was bummed when I heard the news. I was just doing my duty as a responsible citizen by stopping and helping to report what happened, but now I have to spend time in court. (Ironic that I don’t feel that it is my responsibility to go to court, huh?)

And in other unrelated issues…. When you go on vacation you always come back to tons of work or things that need to be done. I never imagined that I’d come home from vacation and have the United States Postal Service angry with me. Well, maybe I’m exaggerating, but they certainly weren’t pleased with us. See, my in-laws are moving here from far Northern Alaska. It is cheaper to box items up and send them through the mail then to ship everything at once using a moving service, so they’ve been sending boxes to us. We’ve received about 30 boxes so far, with about 20 of those arriving at the Post Office while we were gone. They made several attempts to deliver the packages, but everyday we were gone, they would get more boxes in the mail. They left little notices telling us they had tried to deliver and to contact them, so when we got back in town, my husband called the 1-800 number to arrange a time they could deliver all of the boxes. The national office said that it would be 24 hours before they delivered. But the local office received the request for delivery from corporate and called us immediately and said, “Can we come bring these boxes now? We kind of want to get rid of them. They take up too much space.” So now, instead of taking up space at the post office, they’re all over my house. I wonder how many more are in transit….

Colorado Trippin’

May 22, 2004

Well, we hit the road to travel to Durango, CO today. It was an eight hour drive. Yes, eight hours. I don’t like long car drives. I’m like a little kid and I get rather restless after a couple hours in the car, so this long in the car was kind of painful for me, but I managed. We stopped in Moab for lunch. I ordered a salad at McDonalds and they automatically put it in the adult Happy Meal, er… Go Active Meal, for me. So I got this enormous cardboard box that contained my salad, dressing, croutons and the prize, a pedometer. So of course I put the pedometer on. I didn’t take a lot of steps in the car today. Go figure.

After we got past Moab, we saw a lot of wild-death along the way. By wild-death, I mean creatures that at some time were probably considered wildlife, but after meeting up with cars traveling at 65+ mph on a highway, they weren’t living anymore. So, I saw a dead porcupine, a dead beaver and a dead something that was being eaten by a crow.
